LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2016) — Dr. Seamus Carey, the 26th president of Transylvania University, has been named the Grand Marshal of the 37th Annual Alltech Lexington St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The parade, scheduled for March 12 at 1 p.m. goes down Main Street from Midland Avenue to Mill Street.

The son of Irish immigrants, Carey grew up in Bronx. A well-known educator and author, Carey is an avid athlete, having played Irish football and hurling. He was also a basketball player and was recruited by, and played for, Vassar College. It was at Vassar where Carey, the first generation in his family to attend college, found and developed a passion for education and philosophy.

Carey joined Transylvania University and the Lexington community in June 2014 and was officially inaugurated last October. Prior to his appointment, Carey served as Dean of the Arts and Sciences at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.

In naming Carey as Grand Marshal, the Bluegrass Irish Society cited the work he has begun to transform Transylvania.

“Dr. Carey’s investment in mentoring students and creating leaders with character, strength and humility reflects the values of our Irish culture,” said Bill Enright, president of the Bluegrass Irish Society. “We are honored to have Dr. Carey and his wife, Noreen, represent Irish-Americans in Central Kentucky and join us for the parade and festival.”
