James Graham Brown Cancer Center speeds up cancer care for patients

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 17, 2016) — To alleviate fears and jump-start the journey to beat cancer, James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville, a part of KentuckyOne Health, has become the first cancer center in the region to provide next-day appointments for all newly diagnosed cancers.

“Timely information is so important when faced with cancer. In addition, the treatment of cancer has become very complex, requiring multidisciplinary care. Early access to a specialist can ease some of the anxiety and ensure that evaluation and treatment plans are done correctly,” said Beth Riley, MD, oncologist with University of Louisville Physicians and director of clinical operations at the cancer center. “Understanding the options and roadmap of cancer treatment before you start can lead to improved, personalized care, and we are excited to be the first in our region to offer such access.”

Cancer is more beatable than ever, but with days or weeks often between diagnosis and treatment, the wait can be one of the most stressful times. This new program arms patients and their families with answers right away, by calling 502-562-HOPE (4673).

Next-day appointments, and in some cases same-day appointments, will be available at both Louisville locations of the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at 529 South Jackson St., as well as at Medical Center Jewish Northeast located at 2401 Terra Crossing Blvd.

Patients will talk with cancer specialists during the next-day appointment to begin the process of mapping out a personalized treatment plan specific to their form of cancer. At the appointment, patients will meet with an oncologist who can further explain treatment options, answer questions and next steps.

“Information is a critical tool in the fight against cancer,” said Donald Miller, MD, PhD, director of the cancer center. “Providing rapid access to our leading cancer specialists and their expertise delivers patients and families important support and reassurance.”
