FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 3, 2017) — The Kentucky House of Representatives today elected its first Republican Speaker since 1921.

Rep. Jeff Hoover, who represents District 83, which includes Clinton, Cumberland and Russell counties and part of Pulaski County, was elected today by the new Republican majority. Republicans control the House for the first time in nearly 100 years.

The last Republican House Speaker was Joe Bosworth of Bell County, who served in 1920 and 1921. Charles Blandford is the only other recorded Republican House Speaker in Kentucky, serving from 1896 to 1897, according to the Courier-Journal.
