LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 31, 2017) – Saint Joseph East, part of KentuckyOne Health, is helping educate the community on the prevention and treatment of back, leg and neck pain, during a free seminar, held 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the hospital.

The event will take place in the Community Room of the Women’s Hospital Saint Joseph East, located on the first floor of Saint Joseph East, 170 N. Eagle Creek Drive.

The guest speaker for the free seminar is television analyst Bill Walton, member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of All Time. During the seminar, Walton will discuss the importance of seeking treatment for back pain and his personal experience with dealing with it.

Walton, a former member of the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993, retired from the NBA in 1990 after suffering years of back pain injuries, one of which intervened in an attempted comeback in 1990. He recently suffered from debilitating chronic back and leg pain, which nearly compromised his job as a commentator and left him unable to walk, sit, or drive a car.

Walton found relief from his back and leg pain after undergoing the minimally disruptive eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF®) procedure. Fully recovered and back to his active lifestyle, Walton is now sharing his story as a spokesman for The Better Way Back®, a patient support and education program developed and funded by NuVasive®, Inc. The Better Way Back program is dedicated to helping individuals overcome the challenges of chronic back and leg pain by providing them with the resources they need to find treatment.

During the seminar, James Rice, MD, Kentucky Orthopedic Associates, will also discuss the eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF®) procedure, now offered at Saint Joseph East to treat chronic back and leg pain. Saint Joseph East is the first hospital in central Kentucky to offer XLIF.

Space is limited for this free back pain session. To register, call 844.263.5916, or visit http://www.kentuckyonehealth.org/backpainseminar. Light refreshments will be provided and a photo opportunity with Bill Walton will be available from 5-5:30 p.m.
