More road construction in Louisville: Interchange work begins at Interstates 71 and 264

Roadway improvements will enhance safety and capacity

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 17, 2012) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently awarded a contract for interchange improvements at Interstates 71 and 264. Road construction in Louisville is scheduled to begin later this week on an expansion that will enhance capacity and safety.

Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) will be widened from two lanes to three lanes in both directions between US 42 and I-71 (mile points 22.1 and 22.9).  The new lanes are being constructed within state right-of-way along the outside shoulder.

The entrance ramp from eastbound I-264 to northbound I-71 will be extended to the Lime Kiln Lane overpass.  Lengthening this ramp by approximately 3000 feet will provide more merge distance for motorists entering I-71.

A deceleration lane will be constructed on southbound I-71 for motorists exiting onto westbound I-264.  This lane will provide motorists approximately 1600 feet to slow down prior to the curving exit onto the Watterson Expressway.

As part of this project, a new asphalt surface will be paved on I-264 between US 42 and I-71 and on I-71 between the Lime Kiln Lane overpass and I-264.

Lane closures are possible weeknights from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.  Shoulder closures may be in place during daytime hours.  The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 45 mph.

MAC Construction and Excavating was awarded the contract for this project in the amount of $3.9 million. The work is scheduled for completion by Dec. 15.

The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in Kentucky.
