Jeffersontown, Ky.: Where community and commerce meet

Conveniently tucked between three interstates on the east side of Louisville is Jeffersontown, a city that employs more people than live in it. It is only 10 square miles, but has significant influence on the regional and state economy. Major employers include Papa John’s, Delta Dental, PharMerica and Boyd.

Mike Kmetz, director of the Jeffersontown Economic Development Authority, said that 2018 brings exciting revitalization in the city’s Gaslight Square, including streetscape projects. More restaurants and amenities are setting up shop, including Feast BBQ and 3rd Turn Brewing. He touted restaurants upgrading, and said continual work is happening to improve the pedestrian environment.

“What excites me is that we’ve got employment opportunities and entertainment for everyone,” Kmetz said. “From bars and restaurants, to significant office operations, to large and small-scale manufacturing; combined with the spinoff and support employment that goes with all of that is why we lay claim to the being the largest diversified employment center in the commonwealth.”

Growth is happening in the light industrial and manufacturing sector, including the massive expansion of Hydro Power on land that was annexed into Jeffersontown, and Kmetz added “the office market is showing marked improvements.”

Sazerac is doubling its headquarters size, Appriss is growing locally into a building that will bear its name and “influencing significant renovations to the tallest office building in Jeffersontown,” he noted.

Though there simply isn’t much space for a large population, Kmetz said the housing market is very strong in and around the city, with some homes selling for more than the asking price.
