Legislation moves to House for consideration
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 26, 2013) — The Kentucky Senate approved legislation Monday that would prohibit the state from enforcing any new federal gun laws that require gun registration or restrict certain firearms.
Senate Bill 129, sponsored jointly by Sen. Jared Carpenter, R-Berea, and Sen. Ray Jones, D-Pikeville, would allow the state to ignore any new federal restrictions on ownership of semi-automatic firearms, magazines or other firearms accessories. Any future federal requirement for gun registration could also be ignored.
The legislation would not affect federal gun laws in place prior to 2013.
“Kentuckians value their Second Amendment rights,” Carpenter said. “Senate Bill 129 strives to protect that right we hold so dear.”
SB 129 passed by a 34-3 vote. Opponents of the measure cited constitutional objections.
The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
