LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 4, 2013) — In an effort to get more minority and women businesses certified, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government will conduct open certification labs on Dec. 5, Dec. 6, Dec. 9 and Dec. 13.
During the labs, businesses will get assistance with any questions they have, help with filling out paperwork and a review and clarification on collecting documents they need for certification.
“We see certification as a ‘passport’ to opportunity,” said Marilyn Clark, the city’s minority business liaison. “So many supplier diversity programs require certification. It’s better to have it before you need it than need it and not have it.”
For example, certification will be required to work on the upcoming Rupp Arena project or do any work with an organization like LFUCG, KU-LGE, or Toyota or to register in the portal for National Diversity Solutions, a company that does work for large organizations like UK and KCTCS who are looking for minority and women-owned businesses.
“It’s just smart business,” she said.
Certified businesses are also kept in databases that are frequented by larger businesses around the state and the country, Clark said.
“So it’s a great way for other organizations to find a minority and woman-owned business,” she said.
The lab dates and times are:
Thursday, Dec. 5 — 2 to 4 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 6 — 9 to 11 a.m.
Monday, Dec. 9 — 2 to 4 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 13. — 9 to 11 a.m.
The certification labs will be held at the Government Center at 200 East Main Street in the basement training room B-107.
