Will take helm of Kentucky Superintendent’s Group
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 6, 2014) — Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton announced today that he is resigning to become the next executive director of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.
Shelton, whose last day is Dec. 31, has led the school district since 2011.
“Although I did not enter into this decision lightly, I am very excited by the opportunity to work with other superintendents and impact educational improvement on a broader scale,” Shelton said. “In order for Kentucky to continue its progress in education, we must advocate at the state level for better funding of our classrooms throughout Kentucky.”
Fayette County Board of Education Chairman John Price said the school board would have to meet to begin taking steps to replace Shelton. The next scheduled meeting is at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 10.
Under Kentucky statute, a superintendent screening committee comprised of two teachers, one board of education member, one principal, one parent and one classified employee will be formed to assist the school board in the selection of the next Fayette schools chief.
“With the support of the board, I anticipate that we would have a very open process with lots of community involvement,” Price said.
Fayette County Public Schools consists of five high schools, 12 middle schools and 35 elementary schools.
