Motorists reminded to reduce speed, be alert for slick spots
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 17, 2014) — Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) road crews have been out since late Sunday night preparing for the first blast of winter weather to blanket a large part of the commonwealth.
As temperatures dropped throughout the day Sunday and rain turned to snow, crews were out treating roads. The heaviest snowfalls began after midnight and road crews began plowing and treating roadways across a wide swath of the state.
“The safety of Kentucky’s roadways is the focal point of our maintenance program this time of year,” KYTC Secretary Mike Hancock said. “Our snow and ice teams are on the job even before winter weather hits. I’m proud of their professionalism and dedication to service.”
Nearly 2,000 KYTC employees are available for efforts to treat and clear more than 60,000 lane miles of roads.
KYTC outfits more than 1,000 trucks with front-end blades and salt spreading equipment. An additional 382 snow removal contractors are available to assist when needed.
While road crews are out treating roads, the cabinet reminds motorists to:
- Exercise greater caution when driving. Slow down.
- Be prepared for slick conditions.
- Give a wide berth to snow plows and other heavy highway equipment.
- Eliminate distractions while behind the wheel.
Condition reports on major routes are available by calling 511 or by logging onto the 511 traffic and travel information website, 511.ky.gov.
