Waste collection schedule adjusted Thursday and Friday due to extreme heat

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Lexington is expecting extreme high temperatures, and, to keep its employees as safe as possible, the city’s Division of Waste Management will adjust its regular waste collection window on Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19.

Commercial pickups will begin at 3 a.m. each day, while residential pickups will start at 4 a.m. These times will reduce employees’ risk of heat-related injuries such as dehydration and other heat-related illnesses by finishing all routes before temperatures peak.

“Safety is our first priority,” said Tracey Thurman, Director of the Division of Waste Management. “Getting an early start on Thursday and Friday will protect our employees by them not operating collection vehicles and servicing containers during the hottest time of the day.”

Waste carts should be placed on the curb the evening before your regular collection day to ensure collection.
