University of Pikeville joins University Press of Kentucky Consortium

Inclusion bolsters Appalachian representation and affordable student access to scholarly works

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The University of Pikeville is the newest member of the consortium of institutions represented by the University Press of Kentucky. The consortium includes all of Kentucky’s state universities, seven of its private colleges, and two historical societies. Each constituent institution is represented on a statewide editorial board, which supervises the UPK imprint.

“UPIKE’s mission centers on the commitment to preparing students for the future while creating intellectual, cultural, and economic opportunities for Appalachia,” said Assistant Provost Amanda Slone, Ph.D. “Our membership in the University Press of Kentucky consortium supports our mission by offering unique opportunities for collaboration in creative and scholarly work that will honor, celebrate, and advance our students and our region. Our students, faculty, and staff will benefit from access to UPK titles that will add to our free textbook initiative.”

Since the formation of the consortium in 1969, the press has meaningfully served readers, students, and scholars in Kentucky and Appalachia with publications of special regional interest. The Press has more than 60 titles, both fiction and non-fiction, on Appalachia, as well as two series dedicated to the region: Appalachian Futures, and Place Matters: New Directions in Appalachian Studies.

In addition to their shared commitment to Appalachia, the University of Pikeville and the University Press of Kentucky have both recently initiated programs that offer free and open access to books for students. UPIKE launched its free textbook program for students in 2020, around the same time UPK opened access to more than 1,000 of its titles to students, faculty, and staff at universities and colleges across the state.
