Berea College named a Lowest Net Prices College by the U.S. Department of Education

BEREA, Ky. — Berea College has been named a Lowest Net Prices college in the College Affordability and Transparency Center (CATC) list for 2023. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education compiles the list annually.

Berea College is the only postsecondary institution in Kentucky to meet 100 percent of a student’s calculated financial need without loans, meaning students can graduate with little to no debt. Berea students receive a high-quality liberal arts education funded by generous donors.

The college also provides many value-added experiences, including a nationally recognized labor program (for which students receive a paycheck), internships and programs to assist students in transitioning into and out of college through additional financial support.

Berea College students find internship and job opportunities at places such as Lilly Pharmaceuticals, Google, Goldman Sachs and other high-profile companies.

AS AMENDED, the U.S. Department of Education posts CATC lists to meet requirements outlined in the Higher Education Act (HEA) 1965. The lists are updated annually.

The 2023 lists are based on data collected during the 2021-22 Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Data Collection System’s data collection cycle, the most recent data that have undergone the full National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) data review process and that have been publicly released via the IPEDS Data Center.

Specifically, tuition and fees data came from the Institutional Characteristics survey component, which collected 2019-20 and 2021-22 charges. Average net price data came from the Student Financial Aid survey component, which collected and calculated average net prices for the academic years 2018-19 and 2020-21.

Since 1892, no Berea College student has paid tuition. Berea College was founded in 1855 by Rev. John G. Fee to be accessible to people who otherwise could not afford a college education. As the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, Berea College was open to everyone regardless of race, gender or ability to pay.
