Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital launches Magseed Technology

SOMERSET, Ky. — Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital recently introduced an innovative cancer technology, the Magseed marker, to improve outcomes and the standard of cancer care in Pulaski County. This technology benefits patients with a more accurate and less invasive breast tumor removal. The Magseed marker is a minuscule tiny, metal seed, 1mm by 5mm, which is smaller than a grain of rice. The Magseed marker replaces the traditional guidewire method of cancer marking, which has been shown in numerous studies to carry the risk of migrating before surgery. The seed is strategically placed within the tissue to mark tumors before surgical procedures precisely. This facilitates the surgeon locating and completely removing the cancerous tissue more accurately than traditional methods. Once implanted, the Magseed marker remains securely in place, impervious to dislodgment or damage. This marker can be positioned days, weeks, or even months before the surgery. As the first hospital in the region to utilize the Magseed marker, Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital has taken the lead in advancing breast health care. The dedicated team of physicians at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital began using the Magseed marker in mid-September, and the feedback from both medical professionals and patients has been overwhelmingly positive. Dr. Jennifer Smith, Radiologist at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, expressed her satisfaction with the Magseed marker, stating, “In the realm of cancer marking, our surgeons and patients have unanimously found the Magseed marker to be markedly safer, more comfortable, highly effective, and notably time-efficient compared to traditional guidewires. Our team can now implant the Magseed marker well before the surgery, eliminating the need for additional procedures on the day of the operation.” Robert Parker, CEO of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, affirmed LCRH’s commitment to providing the most advanced and effective treatments to patients in Pulaski County. He stated, “We take pride in delivering innovative and compassionate care to our community. The introduction of Magseed marking technology aligns with our mission of making communities healthier. Our patients can access the latest surgical techniques and treatments for breast cancer so they can feel confident staying close to home for their care.” In addition to advanced technology, breast cancer patients have access to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital’s breast surgeons and an integrated team of specialists, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, and nurse navigators.
