FRANKFORT, Ky.—In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Kentucky Housing Corp. (KHC) will host the Kentucky Affordable Housing Conference (KAHC) Tuesday, Sept. 21, and Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Galt House in Louisville. The past two conferences were canceled due to COVID-19.
Dr. Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the America City” and distinguished professor at Princeton University, will kick off the conference at 9 a.m. Sept. 21 with a discussion about his research and how the pandemic has impacted evictions. Representatives from KHC, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and USDA will take part in plenary discussions. Topics include ways the industry can improve access to homeownership opportunities, including providing more access to credit, overcoming bias in appraisals, reducing income disparities, and enhancing diversity and representation.
“The conference has always been an important occasion to highlight the work being done for affordable housing in Kentucky,” said Winston Miller, KHC executive director and chief executive officer. “With recent events, including a global pandemic, tornado in Western Kentucky and flooding in Eastern Kentucky, gathering affordable experts from across the state to discuss challenges, devise solutions and brainstorm ideas is imperative. It is especially fitting that the conference returns on our golden anniversary. We will mark the successes of the first 50 years and prepare for the challenges to come.”
The two-day event will include training, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for partners in specialized housing, mortgage lending, single-family development, multifamily development and Kentucky Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), as well as general breakout sessions and a special track for existing and emerging leaders.
