Lion Technology presents hazmat workshop in the area in May and June

CHICAGO (March 22, 2012) — In a recent press release, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), a division of the DOT, made it clear that it is taking steps to improve enforcement of hazmat safety regulations nationwide.  PHMSA’s requested budget for fiscal year 2013 includes $51 million dollars to improve oversight of hazmat transportation safety and a request to add twelve positions to expand hazmat safety investigation efforts.  The DOT’s plans to bolster enforcement in the coming year make it clear that effective hazmat training will be critical to avoid fines and penalties that are now as high as $55,000 per day, per violation.

To help hazmat shippers prepare for rising enforcement, Lion Technology will offer its Complete Multimodal Hazmat Training Workshop in the area in May and June.  The U.S. DOT requires all hazmat employees to complete training once every three years and periodically as rules change.  New hazmat employees must be trained within 90 days of employment.  Failure to provide adequate training is a commonly cited violation and a major contributing factor to the most costly compliance mistakes. Increased oversight likely will lead to more of these violations being discovered and the companies responsible being penalized.

Lion’s four-day workshop on the DOT (ground), IATA (air), and IMO (ocean) rules will be offered first in St. Louis on May 1-4, followed by sessions in Chicago on May 7-10, in Detroit on June 12-15, and in Cleveland on June 18-21.  Lion’s two-day workshop on only the DOT rules will be offered in Grand Rapids on May 7-8, in Indianapolis on May 10-11, in Cincinnati on May 14-15, in Pittsburgh on June 4-5, and in Rochester on June 7-8.

The cost for the two-day DOT workshop is $695 per person.  Each additional day (IATA or IMO) is $395 per person.  Save when you register for the full four-day program.  Registration includes course reference materials, networking luncheon, Certificate of Achievement, and one year of Membership Services for complete follow-up support.  Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Day 1, and 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on each subsequent day.  Pre-registration is highly recommended.  To register, call (888) 546-6511 or visit Lion online at www.Lion.com/HazmatShippers.
