LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 10, 2012) — Midway College’s plan to open a pharmacy school in Paintsville is on hold after the University of Charleston in West Virginia announced in late April that the program is no longer in its best interests.
The two schools announced in January an initiative that would educate more pharmacists for rural Kentucky. The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy was founded in 2004 in response to a shortage of pharmacists in rural Appalachia. Midway College saw a similar need in eastern Kentucky and embarked on the process of creating a pharmacy program two years ago. Midway renovated a 36,000-square-foot facility in Paintsville and had begun the process of recruiting faculty and students. The agreement between the two schools would have paved the way for “an innovative collaboration,” Midway officials said in January.
Midway is no longer seeking accreditation for its pharmacy school, and is no longer accepting applications for the program, according to the school’s website. Students who previously applied for the program will be reimbursed for academic-related application fees and deposits, the site says.
The Lexington Herald Leader reported Tuesday that issues related to the Paintsville campus will be discussed today at Midway College’s board of trustees meeting.
