Businesses, schools encouraged to participate

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 9, 2017) — The Rotary Club of Lexington is encouraging businesses, restaurants and schools to show appreciation to those who protect and serve during the inaugural First Responders Appreciation Week, May 22-26.

Rotary Club members Greg Howard, a retired Lexington police captain, and Paul Chartier came up with the idea for First Responders Week. He said, “As someone who served in law enforcement for 40 years, I know the value of kind words and encouragement to our public servants.”

Chartier said getting kids involved was especially important to the Rotary Club. “School children are making cards that will be delivered to our police and firefighters to thank them. We wanted plant the seed with these children that our police and firefighters are heroes in our community.”

The week will include a Rotary Club luncheon on May 25 for the heads of Lexington’s law enforcement agencies.
