Siemens PLM Software grant to benefit engineering students
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 4, 2012) — The University of Louisville’s J.B. Speed School of Engineering today announced that Siemens PLM Software has given an in-kind grant of software that will allow students to use and benefit from the same technology that a wide variety of global industries use to develop their products. The software has a commercial value of $427 million.
“This is a generous gift from Siemens PLM Software,” said UofL President James Ramsey. “It will allow our students to work with the same tools used by industry and give them real-world experience.”
Using the PLM (product lifecycle management) software throughout the curriculum should enable students to increase their capabilities through learning how design, simulation, tooling, manufacturing and disposal are connected and interdependent. The software also may be used on projects such as construction of the Speed School Baja racing team’s vehicle or the small rockets students develop for competitions.
“As product complexity continues to grow, students who are able to use PLM technology are expected to be highly recruited,” said Bill Boswell, Siemens PLM Software senior director for partner strategy. “We are honored to have the University of Louisville listed among our prestigious partners to assist in building the next generation of engineers and support manufacturing revitalization efforts across the country.”
Speed School Dean Neville Pinto called the software grant “an excellent example of collaboration between industry and academia to prepare a globally competitive engineering workforce. The generous gift from Siemens will provide our faculty with an advanced teaching tool to educate Speed School students in all aspects of product development.”
The software products include NX™ for computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering; Solid Edge® for 2-D/3-D computer-aided design; Teamcenter® portfolio for digital lifecycle management; and Tecnomatix® portfolio for digital manufacturing. Other institutions that have partnered with Siemens PLM Software include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California at Berkeley, Virginia Tech and Auburn University. Industry users include automotive, aerospace, machinery, shipbuilding and high-tech electronics.
