West Kentucky awards $855,000 in scholarships to 385 students

PADUCAH, Ky. — West Kentucky Community and Technical College awarded $855,000 in scholarships to 385 students in the 2019-2020 academic year, college officials announced recently.

More than 1,300 scholarship applications were submitted for the current academic year, said Lee Emmons, executive director of the Paducah Junior College (PJC), the charitable foundation for WKCTC. The foundation disburses scholarship funding at WKCTC.

Emmons, who is also vice president of institutional advancement and development at WKCTC, said 400 scholarship awards were possible this year through the generosity of donors.

“Many individuals, businesses, and organizations contribute to make higher education attainable for area students,” Emmons said. “Through personally endowed scholarship funds, annual contributions, gifts to the academic scholarship fund and support for the Community Scholarship Program, our generous donors give the gift of education to hundreds of students each year. PJC has the privilege of disbursing these funds through scholarship awards to deserving WKCTC students.”

WKCTC has expanded eligibility for academic or “merit” scholarships for the 2020-21 academic year, for which applications are currently being accepted. Merit-based scholarships will now be offered to high school seniors who apply with a 21 ACT score and 3.0 GPA or above and enroll full-time at WKCTC. “This change expands eligibility to include a significantly greater number of applicants and will reward hard-working students who have commendable academic achievements along with rewarding the very top students,” Emmons said.

In addition to merit-based scholarships for incoming freshmen, WKCTC offers need-based, program-specific, and other scholarships, including those designated for non-traditional and current WKCTC students. Applications for all scholarships are accepted through the WKCTC website at https://westkentucky.kctcs.edu/affording-college/paying-for-college/scholarships/index.aspx.

Scholarship applications for the academic year that begins in August 2020 must be received by March 1, 2020. Students with scholarship application questions may contact the WKCTC student services department at 270-534-3069 after January 6, 2020.

Donations to PJC are tax deductible. Anyone interested in making a donation may contact Emmons at [email protected] or 270-534-3084.
