Lexington invites the community to imagine the future of Nicholasville Road

Brannon Crossing at Nicholasville Road

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Lexington transportation and land use planners want your help in imagining the Nicholasville Road of the future. They have launched a study of the road from downtown Lexington to Brannon Crossing just south of the Fayette-Jessamine County line.

The study, “Imagine Nicholasville Road,” will identify strategies to respond to growth and development along this important regional corridor, including opportunities for retail, commercial and residential development. It will also explore solutions to transportation and congestion issues that have come to define the corridor.

The City is hosting a public open house on March 4 to share project information with the community, answer questions and gather feedback and ideas. Feedback will be used to shape concepts and study recommendations that will guide future development efforts and related decisions.

“Imagine Nicholasville Road will help make sure ongoing redevelopment of the corridor aligns with our community’s goals to provide more housing units and housing options” said Kenzie Gleason, a transportation planner with the City of Lexington. “The study will also look closely at how we can move people more efficiently along the corridor, including improved transit service, and how developments can be more walkable.”

Recommendations from the planning study will be used to develop a blended land use and transportation improvement plan for Nicholasville Road. While land redevelopment will occur over time through private development, transportation needs will be prioritized and coordinated with the city’s transportation improvement program.

Listening to the community is an important part of the planning process. The open house is scheduled for 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 4, in the Community Room at Lexington Green, 161 Lexington Green Circle.

Community members are also invited to share comments and priorities with the “Imagine Nicholasville Road” team by participating in a survey that will be available online from Feb. 28-March 31 at ImagineNicholasvilleRoad.com.

The study will be completed in late fall, 2020. “At the conclusion of this study, we will have a plan in place to help guide decision-making for Nicholasville Road and ensure that its evolution is strategic and well-positioned to meet our community’s goals,” Gleason said.

“Imagine Nicholasville Road” is an outgrowth of the 2018 Imagine Lexington Comprehensive Plan. A core strategy of the Plan is guiding population and economic growth along Lexington’s principal corridors. Nicholasville Road is the first of Lexington’s major commercial and transportation corridors to undergo strategic planning as part of the implementation of the plan. This study will act as a blueprint for the development of land use and transportation plans for other principal corridors in Lexington.
