GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Georgetown College has announced a gift of $1 million has been made to the college by an anonymous donor for the establishment of an Endowed Baptist Professorship. The establishment of the new professorship connects Georgetown College to its Baptist roots and will allow students the unique opportunity to learn about Baptist history, theology, and to think critically about these topics.
The college traces its Baptist roots to its inception in 1829, when the Kentucky General Assembly chartered the Kentucky Baptist Education Society with the intent to establish a Baptist college in Kentucky. Georgetown, Ky. was subsequently chosen as the location of the school, and Georgetown College was formed.
This new professorship further links the college to these roots and will provide even greater opportunities for students to explore topics of faith. “This gift will have a profound impact on our religion department, allowing us to expand its size and increase the diversity of the expertise among the faculty,” said Provost and Dean of Georgetown College Dr. Rosemary Allen. “Our students will most definitely be the beneficiaries of this generosity!”
The establishment of the Baptist Professorship further cements the mission of Georgetown College to provide a championship-level education of the heart and mind to all of its students. “This incredibly generous gift beautifully connects the college’s past, present, and future,” said Georgetown College President Will Jones. “Georgetown College has offered a championship-level education of the heart and mind to generations of students. This professorship will help to enhance this transformational education and the outstanding outcomes future graduates will enjoy.”
A search committee has been established to identify the ideal candidate to fill the professorship before the fall semester of 2020. The Professor of Baptist Studies will teach a course in Baptist history, along with other intellectually stimulating courses in the Religious Studies department.
