Midway University adds two new undergraduate majors and several minors

MIDWAY, Ky. — Beginning this fall, students at Midway University have additional choices for their majors and minors. New majors include a bachelor of science in accounting and a bachelor of science in public health.

“When we add programs we always look at the market needs and growth potential for jobs for our graduates,” said Dr. Mark Gill, dean of Business, Equine and Sport Studies. “Accounting majors and CPAs continue to be needed in a wide variety of business segments. This is a great addition to our offerings of majors. Prior to this accounting was a concentration within our Business Administration major but we are pleased to make it a standalone degree.”

Midway’s program is structured to meet the requirements of the 27 specific credit hours in accounting coursework for students who wish to sit for their CPA exam. Because the CPA exam also requires students to earn a total 150 credit hours (30 more than the 120 to earn the undergraduate degree), students have the option to continue and earn their MBA degree as one method of gaining the additional hours.

In addition to the new majors, several minors have been added including finance, entrepreneurship and leadership.

“We want our students to be able to use a minor to broaden their portfolios and skill set,” said Gill.

The second undergraduate major added is a bachelor of science in public health, expanding the health care focused majors of the university.

“We believe the addition of our public health degree will truly be a growth area for us,” said Dr. Faith Garrett, dean of Health Sciences. “The field of public health is broad and offers students a variety of career opportunities such as working with both private and governmental agencies to help stop the spread of disease or prevent such illness from occurring. Additionally, those in public health educate the public on improving health both individually and as a community. This is a great option for students who are interested in working in the field of health care, and with the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the increased need for public health education professionals.”

The accounting degree is available in-seat or online. Public health is currently only available online.
