FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 29, 2012) – Friday is the last day for delinquent taxpayers to take advantage of Kentucky’s tax amnesty program. Department of Revenue’s main Frankfort office and taxpayer centers throughout the state are open until 9 p.m. local time Friday and will close after the last person in line has been helped.
Taxpayers must apply for amnesty – even those who have not filed tax returns. The Department of Revenue will accept applications through Friday, whether in person or postmarked Nov. 30. If taxpayers do not have all their documentation in order, they can still apply. The taxpayer applies online, sends a check – even a $10 check – or pays an amount online to be able to participate in amnesty. Department of Revenue officials will then work with those taxpayers to determine the amount of tax owed and a payment schedule through May 30, 2013.
“I encourage anyone who owes back taxes to apply for amnesty,” said Lori Flanery, secretary of the Finance and Administration Cabinet. “It’s been 10 years since the last amnesty, and no one knows if there will be another one authorized by the legislature. This allows taxpayers to come clean with the Department of Revenue and save about 30 percent.”
For those who don’t apply for amnesty, tougher penalties and fees, plus a higher interest rate, will be applied, along with more aggressive collection efforts.
The Kentucky Department of Revenue has extended operating hours at its field offices around the state Friday. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., or until the last taxpayer in line is helped.
