Clark Regional Hospital announces expansion

WINCHESTER, Ky. — Clark Regional Hospital announced the expansion of its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Medical-Surgical Unit to accommodate higher-acuity patients. As part of this expansion, the Transitional Care Unit, or TCU, which serves long-term care and rehabilitation patients, will officially discontinue service on August 1, 2023.

“The needs for medical care in our region are changing,” said Matt Smith, CEO of Clark Regional Medical Center. “Today, our community has many capable long-term care facilities and only one acute-care hospital. The expansion of our ICU and Medical-Surgical departments demonstrates our commitment to investing in our hospital to enhance services and meet the needs of our growing community for generations to come. Adding these beds means more patients can receive excellent quality care and treatment right here, close to home.”

The new ICU will include fourteen private rooms, six additional than previously available. Each room will have a private bathroom as well as an exterior window.  This nearly 3,500-foot expansion also provides a new space for storing and staging surgical equipment, ultimately supporting increased efficiencies for surgery teams at Clark Regional. Expanding the medical-surgical unit includes adding 15 beds and repurposing approximately 15,000 square feet of former TCU space for expanded Medical-Surgical units.

The hospital will maintain 10 swing beds to ensure a proper place to care for patients who require post-acute or transitional care for short periods.

Clark Regional Medical Center is the primary health service provider in Clark, Powell, and Wolfe counties and, with the expansion, will be able to accommodate more patients and transfers from smaller healthcare facilities located in Montgomery, Estill, Morgan and Lee Counties, as well as avoid transferring patients who need a higher level of care and aren’t able to stay at Clark due to lack of space.

Clark Regional Medical Center’s newly renovated ICU and expanded medical-surgical unit will break ground in July 2023. The TCU will officially cease operations on August 1, 2023.
