KSP increasing patrols during New Years Eve holiday

FRANKFORT, Ky. (December 29, 2012) – The Kentucky State Police, in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies, will be out in full force during the New Years Eve holiday. The official holiday enforcement period begins Fri., Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. and will continue through Tues., Jan 1 at 11:59 p.m.

Last year, traffic crashes across Kentucky claimed the lives of six people during the New Years Eve holiday period. There were 1,314 crashes reported for that time frame and 63 of those involved alcohol.

Trooper Michael Webb, spokesperson for KSP, advised that the agency will utilize every resource possible to crack down on drunk drivers. “We plan to use safety checkpoints, roving patrols and targeted enforcement details to remove drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways,” says Webb. “When a person chooses to drive while intoxicated, they risk the safety and well being of others. Make no mistake, if you are caught driving impaired, you will go to jail.”

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
