RJ Corman donation helps establish mammography suite at Saint Joseph Jessamine

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 4, 2013) — The Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, part of KentuckyOne Health, has received a gift from the RJ Corman Railroad Group to bring digital mammography services to Saint Joseph Jessamine.

A donation from RJ Corman will help establish a digital mammography suite at Saint Joseph Jessamine.

The gift was made in honor of Rick Corman’s sister, Sandy, and will create the Sandra J. Adams Digital Mammography Suite at Saint Joseph Jessamine. Corman is the founder of the RJ Corman Railroad Group.

“Rick Corman is a true philanthropist and this gift will save lives,” said Barry A. Stumbo, president of Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation.

Kentucky is estimated to have more than 3,000 invasive breast cancer cases diagnosed this year.

“Digital mammography will impact our patients and their families in Jessamine and surrounding counties in a big way,” Stumbo said.

The suite will contain state-of the-art mammography equipment and will be operated with physicians and staff in partnership from the Saint Joseph Breast Center and is expected to open this spring.

The new equipment should be in place in March and planning is under way for a formal ribbon cutting and grand opening in April.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer found in women. Mammograms are the preferred diagnostic test to find breast cancer in its early stages and digital mammography is a critical tool in this early detection. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine determined that digital mammograms were superior to film mammograms for women under 50 years of age, women with dense breasts and women who have not yet gone through menopause, or who have been in menopause less than one year.

Digital mammograms are stored electronically and can be analyzed by computers as well as by radiologists. They also take more views of each breast than traditional film mammograms and use approximately less radiation.

RJ Corman and the The RJ Corman Railroad Group is the largest philanthropic supporter in Saint Joseph history and provided the funds to establish and build Saint Joseph Jessamine RJ Corman Ambulatory Care Center in 2009.
