City partners with LIBA to ‘Keep South Louisville Weird’

Kick-off event set for May 29

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 23, 2013) — The city, through its Department of Economic Growth and Innovation, is partnering with Louisville Independent Business Association in planning a series of events and programs designed to grow locally-owned, independent businesses in South Louisville.

♦ Stability and growth of current independent businesses in South Louisville

♦ The start of new independent businesses in South Louisville

♦ The expansion of current independent businesses from other areas of town into South Louisville

“Our community is successful only when every part of our community is successful,” Fischer said. “We want to encourage not only potential new businesses to consider opening in every part of our city, but also provide new opportunities for existing businesses to expand.”

To kick off the project, a stakeholder conversation will be conducted from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, at Khalil’s, 10966 Dixie Hwy. (near the Gene Snyder, Valley Station Shopping Center).

Fischer, Economic Growth & Innovation Director Ted Smith, and Councilpersons Welch, Yates and Blackwell will be in attendance. Area business owners, leaders and the general public are also invited.

“People often think of the Highlands or Frankfort Avenue when they think of independent businesses (and LIBA),” said Jennifer Rubenstein, director of LIBA. “But there are many independent businesses in other areas of town, and all of them contribute to the quality and character of their neighborhoods.”

The kick-off meeting will allow attendees to share ideas, offer data and provide feedback about what has already been tried (successful or not). A broad outline of the project will be presented, and the details will be filled in with attendees’ input.
