Bob Vance has served since 2007; governor’s chief of staff to serve as acting secretary
FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 14, 2014) – Secretary Bob Vance of the Public Protection Cabinet will retire effective May 31. He was among the governor’s first cabinet appointments after his election in late 2007.
“I have mixed emotions about Secretary Vance’s retirement, because while I’m happy that he’ll be able to spend more time with family, particularly his grandchildren, I also know that we will sorely miss him here in Frankfort,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “Secretary Vance has been an invaluable member of our team, helping us navigate countless challenges. He has a real knack for cutting through bureaucracy and implementing policies and plans that not only work, but also quickly serve the needs of Kentucky citizens. I appreciate his friendship and his leadership. I wish him the best of luck in retirement.”

The employees in PPC are conscientious, dedicated, efficient and effective, and always try to do the right thing.”
The Public Protection Cabinet is responsible for monitoring and regulating a number of activities that impact nearly every Kentuckian – the financial soundness of our state chartered banks and investment companies; Thoroughbred and Standardbred horse racing; the operations of all types of insurance companies; the various forms of charitable gaming; licensing the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages; the appeal of a property tax assessment; building permits and fire safety inspections; and crime victims compensation.
A native of Grant County, Secretary Vance has served as head of the cabinet since December 2007. He earned business and law degrees at the University of Kentucky. He also is a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and the Executive Banking Institute at the University of Louisville. Vance spent most of his career in banking, serving as chairman or senior officer of a number of banking institutions across Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
In November 2013, the Kentucky Executive Branch Ethics Commission presented Vance the prestigious Livingston Taylor Ethics Award for the 2011-2013 biennium. The commission established this biennial award program to recognize individuals, programs or agencies within the executive branch of state government for their outstanding achievement and contributions in promoting the ethical conduct of executive branch employees.
The governor has asked his chief of staff, Larry Bond, to serve as acting secretary of the Public Protection Cabinet. Bond will serve in a dual role until a permanent secretary is announced.
