Three-house course required for certification
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 11, 2015) — The Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has launched its online STAR (Server Training in Alcohol Regulations) instruction.
This training option allows students the ability to take the STAR program at their convenience from the comfort of their home or business. In this three-hour course, students learn about Kentucky state laws and liabilities, how to recognize identifications and how to avoid over-service. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is issued a certificate that is valid for three years. In addition, ABC will continue to offer its nationally recognized classroom instruction on a rotating schedule across the commonwealth.
“We are very excited about the addition of the online STAR training to our course offerings,” said Tiffany Quarles, education branch manager for ABC. “What has made STAR successful is the department’s dedication to help businesses be compliant and keep communities safe. By offering an online version of the STAR program, responsible beverage server training has been made more convenient and more widely available for students. This equates to more sellers and servers receiving the information they need to do their jobs responsibly.”
The success of STAR is evident through the compliance results of Operation Zero Tolerance (OZT), a program in which underage investigative aides are used to attempt to purchase alcohol from retailers. Before implementation of the STAR training program in 2001, retailer compliance on sales to minor laws was about 72 percent, according to OZT compliance checks. The compliance rate has steadily risen and is now at 88 percent. The improvement is due in part to the proactive training given through STAR as well as the diligence of the licensees throughout the commonwealth who send their employees to STAR training and take compliance very seriously.
