Cynthiana native will intern in Oregon
RICHMOND, Ky. (March 28, 2016) — An Eastern Kentucky University junior is one of four students in the U.S. selected for the first summer internship program offered through the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors.
Daniel Klapheke will intern at the Illinois Valley News in Cave Junction, Ore. Klapheke, from Cynthiana, is managing editor of The Eastern Progress student newspaper and has also interned at The Falmouth Outlook in Northern Kentucky. He is a journalism and broadcast/electronic media double major and honors student and plans to graduate in May 2017.
The other interns come from Kansas State University, Stony Brook University in New York and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Interns will work 40 hours per week for eight weeks and will be paid $3,200, with half coming from the newspaper and half from the ISWNE Foundation.
“There are a number of summer internships out there for journalism students, but few that provide the opportunities offered through ISWNE,” said Vickie Canfield Peters, ISWNE Foundation president. “They might, in the same day, sell advertising, write copy, cover meetings, shoot a page-one photograph, take a call from an irate reader, make the coffee and drive the bagged papers to the post office. That’s the beauty of working at one of our member papers – they will not only see it all, but do it all.”
ISWNE has members in Australia (host country for the 2016 summer conference), Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, South Africa and the United States. The newest member is from Nepal. Founded in 1955 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, ISWNE has been headquartered at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin since 1999. The organization hosts the annual Golden Quill Contest, which recognizes outstanding editorial writing.
