Utility relocation for Mountain Parkway in Salyersville to cause delays

Contractors working on the Mountain Parkway Expansion in Magoffin County will need to stop traffic along Salyersville’s Restaurant Row over the next few weeks to replace power transmission lines that cross the current roadway.

SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (May 17, 2016) – Utility contractors working on the Mountain Parkway Expansion in Magoffin County will need to stop traffic along Salyersville’s Restaurant Row over the next few weeks to replace power transmission lines that cross the current roadway.

Traffic will be stopped periodically for about 5 to 10 minutes each time, beginning early Wednesday, May 18. The delays could occur for more than two weeks. Utility crews will work daily, including weekends, to complete all the relocations along the 2.4-mile project.

In some cases, traffic may be shifted to allow at least one lane of the roadway to remain open. Flaggers will be in the area to direct traffic, but drivers along Restaurant Row are asked to reduce their speeds and be prepared for short delays.

No disruptions to utility services are expected.

Improving Restaurant Row

The Restaurant Row project will improve safety and mobility through the busiest and most visible stretch of roadway along the Mountain Parkway corridor, which currently ends just west of Salyersville. The Restaurant Row area begins just east of Exit 75 of the current Mountain Parkway to just east of the KY 114/U.S. 460 intersection (Rock House Road).

The Restaurant Row project includes improving and expanding a system of local access roads along what will become the Mountain Parkway.

The main roadway now has more than 80 access points from private drives and existing intersections. KYTC will work over the next two to three years to create a partially controlled parkway that will change the flow of traffic through Restaurant Row but ensure access to businesses, residences and other facilities.

The project is funded in part by a $24 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The federal funding was awarded to speed construction of this crucial segment of the parkway expansion and support economic development in Eastern Kentucky.

After a contractor for the project is selected this summer, KYTC will share more details about the projected timing and location of planned construction. KYTC will work closely with the project team to reduce impacts to travelers and businesses operating along Restaurant Row, but some periodic disruptions to traffic and access are expected during the construction phase.

About Mountain Parkway project

The Mountain Parkway Expansion is a 46-mile transportation improvement project that will create a wider, safer connection between Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the commonwealth. It is a key transportation project designed to close the only gap in a 400-mile, four-lane, high-speed corridor for commerce and mobility across Kentucky from Pikeville to Paducah. The project will widen 30 miles of the existing parkway from two lanes to four lanes, and will extend the parkway another 16 miles by widening KY 114 between Salyersville and Prestonsburg.
