Paducah kicks off a six-city meeting tour that encourages public participation
FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 29, 2012) – Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson and members of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Tax Reform will conduct the first of six town hall meetings at 6 p.m. CST today at Paducah Tilghman High School, 2400 Washington St., in Paducah.
The town hall meetings will occur throughout the summer, encouraging public comment before the Commission completes its work at the end of the year.
The commission was created by Gov. Steve Beshear in February to evaluate and summarize numerous areas of Kentucky’s tax system. The commission will report its findings to the governor by Nov. 15.
“Kentucky’s system of taxation has served the state well during the recession, but to prepare Kentucky to compete in the future, we must, in a thoughtful and non-partisan way, re-align our system with the principles of fairness and with a 21st century economy,” Gov. Beshear said.
He said that by listening to our citizens, “we hope to understand not only their perceptions of how our tax revenue is raised but also whether they think those taxes are adequate to meet the needs of a state facing dynamic shifts in education, workforce training, early childhood development, aging and health care.”
Chaired by Lt. Gov. Abramson, the commission has conducted three meetings in Frankfort where experts have discussed and outlined elements of the state’s current tax code. The commission is working with a consultant team to assist the 23-member body in studying how to reform the state’s tax code.
The commission is scheduled to host several more meetings throughout the state this year. These meetings are scheduled in Bowling Green, Louisville, Covington, Prestonsburg and Lexington. A complete list of dates and times is available on the website.
Citizens can offer comments through online forms or request to make presentations at the upcoming commission meetings.
