MADISONVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 22, 2017) – The Kentucky Community and Technical College board of regents approved new associate degree programs and reviewed a program elimination report at a Sept. 22 meeting at Madisonville Community College. KCTCS colleges continually review their program offerings to ensure they meet the needs of students and the local workforce.
The board approved four associate degree programs that include an associate in applied science in automotive technology, diesel technology and welding technology for Gateway Community and Technical College along with an associate in applied science in medical assisting for Hazard Community and Technical College.
In addition to the approval of the new programs, they discussed a program suspension report revealing the elimination of 562 programs since January 2016.
“A critical part of the KCTCS mission is to provide workforce education that is relevant and focused on high wage, high demand jobs,” said KCTCS board of regents Chair Marcia Roth. “This requires our colleges to be nimble and flexible, adding and eliminating programs based on demand.”
The board also endorsed the KCTCS Beyond the Numbers: 2016-22 Diversity Action Plan. The plan includes individual plans from each of the 16 KCTCS colleges with targets, strategies, tactics and performance metrics. The plan meets the requirements of the Council on Postsecondary Education’s Kentucky Public Postsecondary Education Policy for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the KCTCS 2016-22 Strategic Plan. The expected outcomes are to improve student success for all students, particularly those traditionally underserved, while creating inclusive and diverse campus environments.
“KCTCS is uniquely positioned to serve students who need nurturing and one-on-one attention to navigate the higher education landscape,” said Chair Roth. “Our faculty and staff meet students where they are and provide them with the education they need to succeed and achieve a better life.”
In other actions, the board ratified 25 certificate programs and approved 6,966 academic credential requests (associate degrees, diplomas and certificates). These credentials include:
- 4,656 candidates for certificates
- 338 candidates for diplomas
- 1,972 candidates for associate degrees
The next meeting of the KCTCS board of regents is scheduled for Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 2017 at the KCTCS System Office in Versailles, Ky.
