HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (Feb. 15, 2018) – Northern Kentucky University is the third safest college campus in the nation, according to a new ranking by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

The 2018 Safest College Campuses in America list placed NKU at number three out of 243 universities and colleges. The list is compiled using the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the Campus Safety Security Survey created by the U.S. Department of Education. Nearly all institutions with an enrollment over 10,000 were considered in this ranking.

“Third on the list is Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ky. The school’s latest enrollment figures list 14,699, and yet the most recent FBI crime figures for the school do not include a single incident of violent crime,” stated the National Council for Home Safety and Security on its website.

When determining each school’s safety score, the National Council for Home Safety and Security also considered the violent crime and property crime rates for the cities in which the schools were located, and the number of law enforcement officers employed by the institution per 1,000 students.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of the safest campuses in nation by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. Providing a safe environment for our students, staff and faculty is a top priority for NKU,” said Dan Nadler, NKU vice president of student affairs. “We have outstanding officers in our University Police Department and strong partnerships with Highland Heights and Campbell County. Everyone works together to extend this environment beyond our campus.”

NKU also received a number of other top safety rankings late last year. Safewise, a home security company, ranked the university and Highland Heights as the seventh safest college town in the country. A college-focused website, Rent College Pads, ranked NKU at 15 on the list of the safest schools in the United States, based on the least amount of crime per capita.

Other Kentucky universities included in the rankings include Morehead State University (#18) and Murray State University (#86).

The National Council for Home Safety and Security is a national trade association comprised of licensed alarm installers, contractors, and other relevant trade groups across the United States. Its goal is to further industry education and public knowledge about home safety and security.
