FRANKFORT, Ky. — With Democrats taking control of the U.S. House of Representatives, Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth, D-Louisville, has been elevated to chair of a powerful House committee.
Yarmuth, Kentucky’s only Democrat in Congress, was named the chair of the House Budget Committee on Thursday, which sets funding levels for the national budget.
In a tweet posted after the announcement, Yarmuth said “Proud to have been elected Chairman of the House Budget Committee in the 116th Congress. Budgets are a statement of our values, and with our majority, @HouseBudgetDems will fight to ensure our budgets expand economic opportunities for all Americans.”
Yarmuth has represented Kentucky’s 3rd Congressional district since 2007.
