Aetna CEO promises salary increase for 10,000 Humana employees

Increased wages would be enacted if Humana acquisition goes through

Louisville, Ky. – If the proposed Aetna acquisition of Humana materializes, Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini says about 10,000 Humana employees will see see their compensation jump to $16 an hour.

In July, health insurance provider Aetna announced plans to takeover Louisville-based Humana in a $37 billion deal. There are about 12,000 Humana employees in the Louisville area.

Bertolini was in Washington D.C. today to discuss the ramifications of the acquisition with the Senate.

“As a result of this policy, we expect approximately 10,000 of Humana’s employees to get a raise to $16 per hour once we integrate the compensation structure of the two companies,” Bertolini said in remarks for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

In April, the Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna increased the company’s employees wages to at least $16 an hour.
