5_smartest_choice_1-768x591“Instead of highlighting uber-selective universities, we wanted to showcase the colleges around the country that are serving students best and also accessible to a wider range of students,” states College Raptor.

Colleges had to meet the following criteria:

  • 50 percent or greater acceptance rate
  • 70 percent or greater freshman retention rate
  • 70 percent or greater 4-year graduation rate

College Raptor, which honored 43 schools on its list, said Centre has a 72 percent acceptance rate, an 87 percent 4-year graduation rate and a 90 percent first-year retention rate. Centre’s graduation rate was the highest among the 43 schools.

“We pride ourselves on making a high-impact college education not only affordable but also achievable for those who meet the College’s academic and social expectations,” said Centre President John A. Roush.

The Centre Commitment, which guarantees graduation in four years, was launched in 2002 and also guarantees a study abroad experience and an internship or research opportunity. An average 85 percent of Centre students study abroad and 90 percent participate in an internship and/or undergraduate research, according to the most recent data for the Class of 2014.

The only schools to finish higher than Centre were Wheaton College (Wheaton, Ill.), Grove City College (Grove City, Penn.) and St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minn.)
