LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 21, 2014) — Winter returned to the Lexington area Tuesday morning with forecasts for one to three inches of snow. Snow will be heaviest during the morning hours.
As of 10 a.m., the Division of Police had answered 32 calls about collisions since 7 a.m. Thirty of those were non-injury and two were injury accidents. The second shift of police officers came in early Tuesday to help with the accidents, said police spokesperson Sherelle Roberts.
Police issued advisories encouraging motorists who do not need to travel this morning to stay off the roads. If you do have to travel, drive cautiously and leave plenty of stopping distance between your car and the car in front of you.
The entire day shifts of the Division of Streets and Roads and the Division of Water Quality are out treating roads in accordance with the city’s snow plan. Crews will remain out at least until 4 p.m. and possibly until 8 p.m., depending on the amount of precipitation received.
Residents should be advised that temperatures are expected to drop throughout the day into the low teens. Arctic air will bring in a bitter wind chill in the teens and single digits.
“We want to get the roads as clear as possible,” said Rob Allen, acting Deputy Director of Streets and Roads. “When the temperatures start to drop, the chemicals we use to treat the roads aren’t as effective.”
People in need of emergency shelter at any time can go to the Hope Center for Men (360 West Loudon Avenue.), the Salvation Army for Women and Children (736 West Main Street) or the Arbor Youth Services MASH Drop Inn Emergency Shelter for Youth 0-17 yrs old. (536 West Third Street.). In addition, the following day centers will be open as regularly scheduled: Arbor Youth Services for Youth 18-25 yrs. old (540 West Third), 10 a.m. -4 p.m,; Catholic Action Center (400 East Fifth Street), 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.; New Life Day Center (224 North Martin Luther King Boulevard) 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
