McCall honored at Phi Theta Kappa’s annual convention
VERSAILLES, Ky. (April 25, 2014) – Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) President Michael B. McCall is one of the latest recipients of the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award. The awards ceremony was today at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, during Phi Theta Kappa’s annual convention.
“It’s such an honor to receive this award,” McCall said. “I’m proud of KCTCS’ commitment to improving the quality and access to education for all Kentuckians.”
The Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to college presidents/campus CEOs at two-year or senior institutions, and state community college directors who have been supportive of Phi Theta Kappa, and are retiring from their careers. The award is named in honor of the late Dr. Michael Bennett, a longtime president of St. Petersburg College in Florida.
McCall’s career spans 44 years of experience in comprehensive community colleges. He announced last year he will retire Jan. 15 after 16 years leading the System that was created in 1997.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, plus Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 135,000 students inducted annually.
Nominations for the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award are submitted by a Phi Theta Kappa chapter, chapter advisor or regional coordinator. McCall was nominated by Margo Hamm of Somerset Community College. She is the Kentucky regional coordinator of Phi Theta Kappa.
