Fewer breweries in South because of religious beliefs, UofL professor says

Research to be published in journal Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice

brewersLOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 13, 2015) — There are less breweries in the South because of religious beliefs, says a study by University of Louisville economics professor Stephan Gohmann that will be published in the journal Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice.

More Baptist voters live in southern states, a demographic that prompts elected officials in those states to support laws making it tough for new breweries to open, Gohmann said “Large established breweries and distributors profit from the reduced competition, so they make campaign contributions to maintain the status quo.”

The Atlantic published a story today about Gohmman’s research.
