I-65 construction work planned during Memorial Day Weekend

Ramp closures necessary to perform paving operations

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 23, 2012) — Construction work is scheduled to continue over the Memorial Day holiday weekend on the Interstate 65 pavement replacement project. Crews will be paving the right lane of southbound I-65 between the Chestnut Street overpass and the Watterson Expressway (I-264).

“We want the paving work on this project to be completed prior to August to avoid conflicts with the National Street Rod Association event and the Kentucky State Fair,” said Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for the Department of Highways, Louisville District. “We also want to minimize overlap between this project and construction on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge.”

The right lane of southbound I-65 will be closed this weekend between the Chestnut Street overpass and the Watterson Expressway (mile points 135.4 and 131.2). This lane closure is scheduled from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 25 until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 28.

As part of this paving operation, several entrance and exit ramps on southbound I-65 must be closed to traffic. The following ramps will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday, May 25 until 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 26:

• The entrance ramp from First Street

• The exit ramp at St. Catherine Street (Exit 135)

• The entrance ramp from Oak Street

• The entrance ramp from Preston Street

• The entrance and exit ramps at Arthur Street (Exit 134)

In addition, the following ramps will be closed from 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 28:

• The entrance and exit ramps at Warnock Street (Exit 133)

• The entrance ramp from Eastern Parkway

• The entrance and exit ramps at Crittenden Drive (Exit 132)

To help reduce congestion and provide for a safer work zone, tractor-trailers will be required to detour the project area on weekends when lane closures are in place.

Trucks traveling northbound on I-65 will be detoured via westbound I-264 to eastbound I-64, from which they can access I-65 at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge. Trucks traveling south from southern Indiana will be detoured via westbound I-64 to eastbound I-264, from which they can access I-65 near Louisville International Airport and the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. Law enforcement officers will be stationed at each end of the project to enforce this detour.
