LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 8, 2017) – Saint Joseph Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health, was recognized today by U.S. News & World Report as a ‘high performer’ in colon cancer surgery.

“We are honored to be recognized for our outstanding work in colon cancer surgery,” said Bruce Tassin, president, Saint Joseph Hospital. “This recognition is reflective of the quality care our physicians and staff deliver to our Lexington community.”

To develop the rankings, U.S. News and World Report assesses data from nearly 5,000 medical centers across multiple clinical specialties and conditions and surveys responses from more than 30,000 physicians to rank hospitals in 16 adult specialties and 9 common conditions. Results are based on patient outcomes, such as death rates and patient safety indicators; structural measures, such as hospital volumes and staffing; and process measures, such as hospital reputation. These factors were weighed to determine national and regional ranking of hospitals.

For the 2017-18 rankings, fewer than 200 of the 5,000 evaluated U.S. hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty and approximately 60-70 percent of all hospitals in a particular procedure or condition were rated ‘average.’ Some hospitals were rated below average in part because of low patient volumes, not necessarily due to a high number of deaths or other adverse events. External ratings are just a starting point for use in health care decision making.
